Overview
SmartEdge IT Solutions provides PHP development for businesses that need custom functionality, application maintenance or integration work across PHP-based systems. Projects can include custom web applications, backend development, CMS customization, API integration, database-driven systems and modernization of existing PHP code.
We can work with established codebases where replacing the whole platform would create unnecessary cost or risk, first reviewing the application structure, dependencies, security issues and performance bottlenecks. For new projects, the architecture is selected around the application requirements, hosting environment, integrations and expected maintenance. PHP development can also sit behind WordPress, Laravel and other web platforms, making code quality, security and clear interfaces important parts of the implementation.

PHP ECOSYSTEM
Where PHP work usually sits
PHP is still the most widely deployed language on the web, and most PHP work is not a new build. It is making an existing system safer, faster or capable of something it currently is not.
-
Application development
Business systems, portals and tools written for a specific process.
-
CMS work
Themes, plugins, modules and content structures for WordPress, Drupal and similar platforms.
-
Integration
APIs, webhooks and connections to internal and third-party services.
-
Maintenance
Dependency updates, PHP version upgrades, bug fixes and monitoring.
-
Modernisation
Refactoring and staged replacement of parts of an older codebase.
-
Performance and security
Profiling, query work, caching, input handling and exposure reduction.
LEGACY VERSUS MODERN APPROACH
Modernising an existing PHP codebase
These are the two routes we see most often. Neither is automatically correct, and the right choice depends on how much of the system is genuinely load-bearing.
Incremental improvement
Targeted replacement
Scope
Tightens one area at a time: security, performance, structure or a specific feature.
Rebuilds a bounded component or subsystem behind a stable interface.
Risk
Low and reversible. The system keeps running throughout.
Higher, and mitigated by keeping the old component in place until the new one is proven.
Cost shape
Spread across several small engagements, each independently valuable.
A larger single investment with a clearer payback point.
Best when
The application is stable, the team knows it, and no single part is the problem.
One component is the bottleneck, the source of defects, or blocks required work.
What we document
Findings, risk notes and the recommended sequence.
The interface contract, migration plan and rollback route.
API AND DATABASE ARCHITECTURE
How PHP applications are structured here
- Entry point Front controller, routing and request handling.
- Application logic Business rules separated from presentation and infrastructure.
- Data access Prepared statements, a query layer and migrations rather than ad hoc SQL in views.
- Integrations External services reached through small, replaceable adapters.
- Operations Configuration, logging, error handling and deployment kept in version control.
CAPABILITIES
What our PHP developers do
Build
- Custom applications Systems written for a specific requirement rather than configured from a template.
- Web applications Structured code with a clear separation between layers.
- CMS development Themes, plugins and modules for existing content platforms.
Connect
- APIs and webhooks Documented endpoints with validation, error handling and authentication.
- Third-party integration Payments, email, storage and external platforms.
- Database work Schema design, migrations, query optimisation and data repair.
Sustain
- Legacy upgrade Runtime and dependency updates, and refactoring where it pays for itself.
- Security and performance Profiling, caching, input handling and exposure reduction.
- Maintenance Monitoring, fixes, tests and continued development.
PHP DEVELOPMENT
Modern PHP, and the frameworks that suit the job
Composer-managed dependencies, PSR standards, typed properties and strict types, Laravel or Symfony where a framework earns its place, PDO or an ORM for data access, and profiling with Xdebug or Blackfire when an application needs its performance understood before it is changed.
- PHP 8
- Composer
- PSR standards
- Symfony components
- WordPress
- Drupal
- CodeIgniter
- MySQL
- PostgreSQL
- Redis
- REST API
- PHPUnit
- Docker
WORKFLOW
How a PHP engagement runs
- Review We review the existing code, the version of PHP in use, the framework or lack of one, the database and the hosting. You receive a written assessment that names what is sound and what is not, rather than a general recommendation to rewrite.
- Assessment We test the assessment against the requirements you actually have, including performance, security and the parts nobody has touched in years. You receive the findings with the reasoning, so you can weigh them yourself.
- Plan We plan the work in stages that each leave the site working, with the order chosen by risk and dependency rather than convenience. You receive the plan and can see why each stage sits where it does.
- Deliver We deliver the agreed stages, writing or replacing code as the assessment justified, with testing as we go. You get a working site throughout and a written record of what was changed at each stage.
- Support We continue to maintain, patch and improve the application, and document it as we go. You receive a named contact and honest advice about what should be rebuilt and what should be left alone.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Questions about this service
Not automatically. A rewrite is a large, risky commitment, and plenty of older PHP systems can be improved substantially for a fraction of the cost, which is usually where legacy software modernization earns its place. SmartEdge IT Solutions reviews the codebase first and tells you which problems are contained and which are structural. If a rewrite is genuinely the right call we will explain the case for it rather than defaulting to it.
A currently supported release, and ideally the most recent one your dependencies allow. Older branches no longer receive security updates, so running them is a standing risk rather than a preference. Where a dependency blocks the upgrade we identify it specifically, because those are the pieces that need replacing.
Yes, and that is most of the PHP work SmartEdge IT Solutions does. We follow the conventions already in the code where they are sound, introduce improvements in contained areas, and keep the system working at every stage of the engagement rather than leaving you with a branch that cannot run. Keeping it that way afterwards is application maintenance and support, not something you restart each time the code changes.
Yes, and at SmartEdge IT Solutions that means the logic where a regression would be costly — business rules, authorisation and integration behaviour. We add tests as part of the work rather than as an extra phase, and we document which areas are covered so the gaps are visible. Where you want wider coverage planned and reported as its own piece of work, that is application testing and quality assurance.
Usually quite a lot. We profile real queries rather than guessing, add the indexes the query patterns actually need, rewrite the few statements that scan whole tables, and deal with common legacy patterns: N-plus-one queries inside loops, missing pagination on list screens, and sorting done in the application that belongs in the database. Often one hour of measurement finds a handful of queries responsible for most of the delay. Where the schema itself is the barrier we say so, and where the application is on Laravel we work inside that structure.
That is common in older PHP code and it needs a plan rather than a panic. Each unmaintained dependency gets assessed for whether it is still used, whether a supported alternative exists, and whether it can be isolated behind a small adapter so it can be replaced later without touching everything around it. Replacing it only earns its cost if it is a real security or compatibility risk; otherwise we document it and move on. That triage is the first piece of work in legacy software modernisation.
Yes, and the work is usually smaller than people expect once the existing code is legible. We follow the patterns already in the codebase so a new integration looks like the rest of it rather than a bolt-on, then handle the unglamorous parts: signature verification, idempotency so a retry does not charge twice, webhook handling, and what happens when a call fails halfway. Rate limits and key rotation get documented, and the integration is covered by the same tests as the business logic. It is normal API and system integration work.
Yes, and for an application that has quietly lived on one server for years that is often where the real risk sits. We would set up repeatable deployment from version control, a staging copy, automated backups with a rehearsed restore, and a patching routine that someone actually owns. The server then stops being the only thing between you and an outage. That infrastructure side is separated from the code work so you can move either half to another supplier, and it is what VPS management covers.
